Day 1: Thursday 07 May 2020 – Brisbane to Charleville
Today we head west into Big Sky Country along the Warrego Way. We’ll pass through the Garden City of Toowoomba, the Melon Capital of Chinchilla and the Oil & Gas town of Roma. Our last leg of the journey sees us arriving in Charleville for check-in late afternoon. Tonight enjoy the warm hospitality of our Charleville hosts with a delicious country barbecue and local entertainment; a perfect way start for our Outback adventure! You’ll also get to explore the wonder of the Outback night sky with a visit to the Charleville Cosmos Centre and Observatory. Overnight Charleville (L,D)
Day 2: Friday 08 May 2020 – Charleville to Longreach
This morning after breakfast we join a local guide for a tour of what was once a USAAF Top Secret Base. The USAAF arrived in Charleville during WWII and set up camp for four years. At its peak the base stationed up to 3500 personnel. That’s Charleville’s population today!
Leaving Charleville, we’ll follow the Matilda Way through Augathella with its colourful bushranger history to the oldest town in western Queensland – Tambo. Take a stroll down the Heritage Walk and call into the Tambo Teddies workshop. Head north to Barcaldine and visit the Tree of Knowledge. Stand under this magnificent structure built in memory of the famous ghost gum that was the central meeting place for the Shearer’s Strike in 1891.
From Barcaldine it’s then just an hour drive west along the Matilda Way to Longreach, the heartland of Outback Queensland. You’ll have time to check-in and freshen up ready for a great welcome to Longreach. Tonight you’ll join the award-winning Drover’s Sunset Cruise along the Thomson River, followed by dinner under the stars at Smithy’s Outback Dinner & Show. 2 nights at Albert Park Motor Inn, Longreach (B,L,D)
Day 3: Saturday 09 May 2020 – Longreach Red Tail Events
This morning enjoy a town tour of Longreach then transfer to the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame. Wander the five themed galleries of this iconic Outback attraction and watch the entertaining Outback Stockman’s Show.
Return to your accommodation so you can freshen up for the Qantas Centenary Celebration Races at the Longreach Country Race Meet*. Mix in with the locals as they squeeze in as much fun as possible and soak up the country hospitality. Tonight, you’ll dine on the tarmac for the ‘Under the Southern Cross’ Celebration Dinner* at Qantas Founders Museum. Dress code for both events is Country Casual. Ladies, there’s no need to wear your finery or high heels – laidback comfortable clothing is recommended. (B,D)
*Regular courtesy shuttles will be operating on a continuous loop between venues and accommodation throughout the day/night.
Day 4: Sunday 10 May 2020 – Winton
After breakfast, board our coach for a full day tour into Waltzing Matilda Country and historic Winton. Visit the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum, perched high on a magnificent mesa, around 30km from Winton. Home to the largest collection of Australian dinosaur fossils in the world the attraction features a working laboratory, collection room and Dinosaur Canyon. Lunch will be at the famous Winton Club, where the first board meeting of Qantas was held on 09 February 1921. Enjoy some free time in downtown Winton to explore the opal shops and the Waltzing Matilda Centre. Return to Longreach late afternoon in time for a Farewell Barbecue Dinner and Drinks at Longreach Airport before your flight departure. (B,L,D)
