Day 3: Friday – Cloncurry

We follow the Matilda Way via Winton to Kynuna and the Blue Heeler Hotel for a slice of Australian folklore.  It was here that Banjo Paterson brokered a truce with the shearers who had burnt down the Dagworth woolshed and 143 jumbucks.  Rather than shoot each other, they sang Waltzing Matilda and both ‘swagman’ and ‘squatters’ sank their last drinks at the bar.  Next stop will be the Walkabout Creek Hotel made famous in the movie blockbuster Crocodile Dundee.  Late afternoon in Cloncurry we discover the great Australian story of our Royal Flying Doctor Service at John Flynn Place; one of the largest and most comprehensive aeromedical organisations in the world.  2 nights Gidgee Inn, Cloncurry.

Day 4: Saturday – Adels Grove

Journey around 180km north of Cloncurry on a sealed road to the Burke & Wills Roadhouse before travelling on to the beautiful Gregory River for a relaxed picnic lunch; The river is spring fed and the water is crystal clear.  We’ll then travel a largely unsealed section of road around 90km to Adels Grove, an oasis in the outback and just 10km from the spectacular Lawn Hill Gorge, Boodjamulla National Park. The park features spectacular gorge country, sandstone ranges and World Heritage fossils. On arrival at Adels Grove, your accommodation for the next two nights, enjoy some free time to explore your surrounds before dinner. 2 nights Adels Grove

Day 5: Sunday – Adels Grove

After breakfast, you’ll board a state-of-the-art solar powered pontoon boat for an hour long guided cruise along tranquil Lawn Hill Creek and the breathtaking Lawn Hill Gorge.  Have your camera ready to capture the gorge’s vivid orange sandstone cliffs towering above emerald green waters. Join a guided interpretive tour on one of the many walks the Park has to offer to discover natural and cultural sites. The afternoon is yours to enjoy at leisure in this stunning location.  Tonight we’ll watch the beautiful sunset from Harry’s Hill.

Day 6: Monday - Karumba

Leaving Adels Grove today we’ll head east on the Gregory-Lawn Hill Road then travel north to Burketown along State Route 84.  Meet guides from the Yagurli tours for local stories and morning tea then enjoy a picnic lunch at Leichhardt Falls.  In Normanton, take a selfie with Krys the life-size statue of the largest saltwater crocodile ever caught. See the Purple Pub and Queensland’s earliest surviving and heritage-listed Burns Philp store. Arrive in Karumba in time to capture your first memorable Gulf sunset.  2 nights End of the Road Motel, Karumba

Day 7: Tuesday - Karumba

Discover the amazing secrets of the mighty barramundi at The Barramundi Discovery Centre, the only hatchery in the world to breed the Southern Gulf strain of this iconic fish.  Your tour of this new state of the art Interpretive Centre incudes the opportunity to feed a Barramundi.  Enjoy free time after lunch to explore the town or to simply relax and take in this beautiful location.  Late afternoon, we’ll cruise to a special sand island in the Gulf of Carpentaria where we’ll toast the sunset as spectacular twilight hues colour the skies.

Day 8: Wednesday – Cobbold Gorge

Travel to Normanton for a nostalgic rail journey on the famous Gulflander, affectionately called the ‘Tin Hare’. Visit the historic gold mining townships of Croydon and Georgetown. See the impressive mineral collection display at the TerrEstrial Centre. Arrive at the hidden outback oasis Cobbold Gorge in time for sunset drinks overlooking the stunning infinity pool!  2 nights Cobbold Village

Day 9: Thursday – Cobbold Gorge

On a guided cruise, you’ll glide silently between towering cliffs in a specially designed, battery powered punt. Join an optional walk to the top of the escarpment for awesome views of the gorge below.

Day 10: Friday – Mount Surprise

We board the Savannahlander in Forsayth for a highly personalised rail tour on this classic 1960s ‘silver-bullet’ railmotor. Enjoy a light lunch at the Einasleigh pub with its quirky miniature furniture collection. Re-board the train and travel to Mount Surprise, then transfer by coach to Bedrock Village for a two night stay.  2 nights Bedrock Village, Mount Surprise

Day 11: Saturday – Mount Surprise

Explore the Undara Lava Tubes, part of the world’s longest lava flow from a single volcanic crater. These tubes were created when the Undara Volcano erupted over 190,000 years ago, pouring out enough lava to fill Sydney Harbour three times over.  Join a highly skilled Savannah Guide for amazing insights into the tubes’ environmental, geological and historical features.  We return to Bedrock Village for a relaxed dinner under the stars before gathering around the campfire with fellow travellers.

Day 12: Sunday – Cairns

  • Gulf Savannah Tour....one of the best I have experienced. I have many years experience in conference organizing both in Australia and Overseas. As part of these events I have organized many district tours. I have traveled extensively within Australia and overseas. The recent trip with Outback Aussie Tours was one of the most informative, enjoyable and entertaining tours that I have ever experienced. All meals are included, including some very interesting morning and afternoon tea locations. Great staff and always very helpful. If you want to really see the Australian Outback these are the people who can take you there, in comfort.

  • Thompson River Cruise & Smithy's Outback Dinner & Show - Just part of the Aussie Outback Tour experience We did the cruise as part of our Aussie Outback Tours "Journey of the Gulf Savannah". Unfortunately there is no provision to review the whole trip so just take this advice - "if you can possibly take the Journey of the Gulf Savannah, make sure that you do it". It is just the best trip of this area of Australia and Aussie Outback Tours (headquartered in Longreach) are the masters - as were our hosts Brett & Kathy. The Thompson River Cruise and Smithy's Outback Dinner and show was just great (we almost missed out due to the preceding unseasonal rain making access difficult). How lucky were we that we were able to go. Delightful relaxing cruise, nibbles and drinks set the scene for a wonderful serene sunset. Then back to the river bank to Smithy's Outback Dinner & Show. Great food and almost non-stop entertainment from the talented and hard working Owen Blundell. It's in the book as a life highlight.

  • Journey of the Gulf Savannah - This was a fantastic 17 day experience! We had great guides who were very friendly and experienced. We went of the beaten track to visit places you might not get to see if travelling on your own. We had a good group in a well equipped 4wd bus. The accommodation was great for the remote locations we visited. Even the weather was extraordinary with the west as green as you will ever see.

  • Have just completed a 17 day tour to the Gulf with Kathy & Brett as our tour guides. What a couple they turned out to be! Exceptional guides, caring, fun and just a wealth of knowledge between the two of them. Hope they get time to write a book one day with all their amazing adventures – some of which they shared with us along the way. They knew the name of every blade of grass, trees, birds, snakes (ugh) and even windmills, and much, much more. Thanks Kathy and Brett, you are two in a million! Thanks also to the Smithy family for their hospitality while we were in Longreach. You deserve to succeed in business. I would certainly recommend Outback Aussie Tours and would travel with them again. Thanks to all our fellow travellers as well – you were a great bunch.

  • Journey of the Gulf Savannah - 13 days in the west of Queensland plus the Gulf & Cairns. All of those who reside in "the city" should take a tour like this. This is the "bush"...from the enormous cattle stations to magnificent gorges, river cruises, vintage train trips, crocodile watch, helicopter trips, variable countryside, live shows & presentations & superb hospitality from motel staff to the station staff. Truly outstanding were Longreach's Stockman's Hall of Fame; QANTAS museum; Drover's Sunset Cruise / Longreach; Blue Heeler pub; Walkabout Creek pub; Albion pub (Normanton); Karumba (great little town / sunset dinner cruise); Gulflander train; Cobbold Gorge (magnificent); Savannahlander train; Undara Lava Tubes. A great trip
